All about acne

Acne is the most common skin disease, affecting up to 85% of New Zealanders aged between 15 to 25 years old.

Acne happens when the oil glands (pores) in the skin become blocked. Hormones make the oil glands produce more oil (sebum). If the pores become blocked, oil builds up and causes irritation under the skin. Bacteria rapidly multiply within these blocked follicles, causing redness, swelling and tenderness.

The face, neck, chest, shoulders and upper back are the areas mainly affected by acne as they have the highest number of oil glands.

The important thing to remember is that all types of acne can be well controlled by safe and effective treatment. There is nothing wrong in seeking medical advice for your pimples. In fact, it's the smartest thing you can do, as acne is a medical condition that can be effectively treated. Seeking medical treatment sooner rather than later can reduce the possibility of acne scarring. Scarring can be permanent. Treatment can certainly help with the emotional stresses that acne can cause.
