My work explores gesture in relation to harmony and dissonance, with a focus on the practice of expressive paintings that move between grace and awkwardness. In particular, it examines the question of how vitality within a painting can be maintained, driven by the methods of rupture and abandonment, and how a new sense of harmony may emerge within dissonance. In this respect, it is the dissonance, the difficulty that gives vitality to the work of art. The approach taken is to explore the potential of aesthetic qualities- arising from such processes as a smear, correction and rhythmical play in making paintings. Vivienne is currently completing a Master of Art at AUT.
